President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are on their way to Fort Hood, the U.S.'s largest military base, for an afternoon service today. Fort Hood's Soldier Readiness Center was the scene of a massacre last Thursday, as Major Nadil Malik Hasan appeared to stage a one-man war against the military.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of each year, 11/11/11, November 11, also known as Poppy Day, is the day uniformed veterans stand outside grocery stores and hand out red paper poppies to pin to our coats. As grade school children growing up in the 60s, who knew what the significance was? A red poppy was a red poppy, given by an official uniformed war veteran, and therefore cool to a child.

Major Nidal Malik Hasan is the hospitalized Fort Hood shooting suspect who allegedly shot and killed 13, and wounded 29 in his Thursday rampage last week. A new report now indicates that Hasan warned that Muslims should be given conscientious objector status, rather than being forced to fight other Muslims, over two years ago.

A gunman at the Stissing Mountain High School in Pine Plains, New York high school has taken the principal hostage. The high school in upstate New York is currently on lock down and current reports indicate that students are safe. The school is about 90 miles north of New York City.

John Allen Muhammad, better known as the DC Sniper, is scheduled to die by injection at a Virginia prison for the slaying of Dean Harold Meyers in 2002. The U.S. Supreme Court has has refused to block the execution.

Fort Hood shooting suspect, Major Nidal Malik Hasan,apparently contacted an Islamist sympathetic to al Qaeda and U.S. intelligence agencies were aware of this long before the shooting spree in Texas occurred last week.

Speaking via phone to the AP on Monday, Scott Roeder, 51, of Kansas City Mo., confessed to the killing of Dr. George Tiller in May. He added that he plans to use the necessity defense at his trial.

The driver of a big-rig went out of control and plunged over the side of the Bay Bridge early Monday morning. The driver of the truck that was involved in the accident and was employed by a company in San Ramon, lost his life as helost control on the Bay Bridge's S-curve and went over a traffic barrier. The truck plummeted about 200 feet to Yerba Buena Island below.

China announced on Monday it had executed eight Uighurs, Chinese Muslims, for crimes committed during July riots that killed 200 people in far western Xinjiang region. One other man was executed as well.

The suspect in last week's mass shooting at the Fort Hood, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, is conscious and talking. This news comes from Dewey Mitchell who is the spokesman for the Brooke Army Medical Center where Hasan is being treated.

The three U.S. hikers which wandered into Iran from Iraq and were subsequently captured have been accused of espionage, an Iran prosecutor said on Monday. The three have been in custody since late July.

The six-day strike by operators, mechanics, and maintenance staff of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) ended as it began: in the middle of the night. A tentative agreement reached shortly after midnight Monday brought SEPTA personnel back to work in time for the Monday morning commute to work.
